But just off the top of my head - I've liked Mark Twain, Anya Seton, Elizabeth George Speare, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Audrey Niffenegger, some Ernest Hemingway, some Diana Gabaldon, Nora Roberts. In nonfiction I like Malcolm Gladwell, David McCullogh, Lev Vygotsky. And some of my favorite writers are people who haven't been published - people whose stories I've read on the internet. I'm always on the lookout for a good story :) KarenMChttp://karenmcox.merytonpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954683999390981517.post-14606351282565781372012-10-06T13:31:59.380+02:002012-10-06T13:31:59.380+02:00Hi Karen! I think ...Fan Fiction, as a whole, is interesting. I think what grounds it into Austen canon is directly in proportion to what grounds the reader into canon, and not necessarily what inspires the FF to begin with. What a convoluted sentence. For example - my DH will see me read something and say, 'What is Darcy this time?' I'll say, 'he's on a boat, a rock star, rancher, vampire, etc. There have been some stories that I've stayed away from particularly because I personally could not buy the beginning premise. Is that the writer's fault? Nope.

Saying that...1932 WAS one of those novels until I heard Karen at Austenesque last month. Now, I can't wait to read it. Her chat helped make the connection I was looking for to have an Austen connection for me. That's what's great about life and entertainment in general. We can change our minds if we want!

So yes, please enter me in this giveaway. I love Persuasion too but Pride and Prejudice is a close second. Elizabeth Bennet is my favourite heroine while Captain Wentworth tops Darcy for me. I wonder what will happen if we matchmake Elizabeth and Wentworth. Any JAFF writer has done this? My reason is that I liked the second chance at romance and always thought that they could only have been a truly happy couple because they did have to go through that eight year separation and had some maturing to do.

Look forward to reading your book. The scene between Mr Knightley and Emma arguing about Harriet Smith and Robert Martin is one of my favorites! I wondered if she would be so adamant about turning him down if she really was in reduced circumstances. After all, Regency Elizabeth has never actually known want and hard times. So I thought - 'what would be a time in which something like that might have happened?' - not a Regency time when her father passed away or something, but another time and place completely. My grandmothers were young women starting families during the Depression, and I remembered their stories about how they coped. So it made sense to put those 2 things together: Elizabeth Bennet and the Great Depression in the US South (because I'm from the South so I know a bit more about the area). The rest of the story just sort of spilled from that: for example, how would Mr & Mrs B react to poverty, how would the Depression make Darcy a different man, how would it change Georgiana, Wickham, Bingley, etc. It was great fun to write about them in that new setting! I really appreciated your talking about Jane Austen.
It is difficult to choose a favourite JA book, hero, heroine, but I surely love Persuasion. The whole scene of Captain Wentworth writing his letter, the room where it happens, what Anne is saying and how he reacts to her words - as we can read with her afterwards.
