MAGIC, MR DARCY AND SECOND CHANCES: A CONVERSATION WITH AMY GEORGE

"There is no enjoyment like reading!"
Northanger Abbey

One of the greatest joys of Jane Austen's enduring legacy is seeing how each generation of writers finds fresh and imaginative ways to revisit her beloved stories. Some remain close to the original, while others dare to ask, What if...?

Today, I am delighted to welcome historical novelist Amy George—to My Jane Austen Book Club.

Her latest novel, His Dark Heart, takes readers into a world where Pride and Prejudice meets fantasy. In this magical reimagining, Lord Darcy is a prince who uses another’s powers  to manipulate fate itself—but, as every lover of fantasy knows, magic always comes at a price.

I invited Amy to tell us more about the inspiration behind this unusual Austenesque variation, her love of Jane Austen, and the challenges and delights of blending romance with fantasy.

Please join me in giving Amy a warm My Jane Austen Book Club welcome!

COLOUR, EMOTION AND MR DARCY: INSIDE BARRY S. RICHMAN'S NEWEST PRIDE AND PREJUDICE VARIATION

By Maria Grazia, My Jane Austen Book Club

Today on My Jane Austen Book Club, I’m delighted to welcome back Barry S. Richman, author of the beloved Follow the Drum. With his second Pride and Prejudice variation, Color My World, he offers another bold and imaginative reimagining of Austen’s classic. In this new tale, Elizabeth Bennet awakens from a fall with a remarkable ability: she sees people’s emotions as colors—except in one man. Fitzwilliam Darcy is a void. A mystery. And against her better judgment, she’s drawn in. With emotional insight, quiet magic, and a sharper focus on Mr. Bennet, Color My World promises to be a deeply affecting romance.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Less than one year into her marriage to respected magistrate George Knightley, Emma has grown unusually content with her newfound partnership and refreshed sense of independence. The height of summer sees the former Miss Woodhouse gracefully balancing the meticulous management of her elegant family estate and a flurry of social engagements, with few worries apart from her beloved father’s health. When suspicions fall on a harmless local, Emma decides to discreetly investigate. I’m here today celebrating a double book release! A Little Bit Foolish is a collection of Pride and Prejudice April Fool’s stories, and Swipe Right for Mr. Darcy is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice.

In 2021, I began a new tradition of releasing a new comedy story on April Fool’s Day with my  short story Unconventional, an Austentatious Comedy that Defies Expectations!   The following year, I wrote An Unexpected Party.  Last year, my plans for a short story were interrupted by the release of my full-length variation A Favorable Impression, and thus I did not complete an April Fool’s story in 2023. Therefore, this year, I decided to release a whole collection, including 3 brand-new stories!
